How to grind a rim

Grinding Your Rim

In bike trials you can have smooth or ground rim. Many riders prefer ground rim for extra bite & more friction that allow them to ride in various condition without losing a lot of braking power.

Grinding your trials rim is very simple and only take few minutes per side. From light, medium to harsh grind, you can experiment your grinds to suit your needs.

Before deciding to grind your rim, make sure you have the following tools & go over the checklist.

1. Do I have the right type of pads? If you run a hard grind but your pads are designed for smooth or light ground rim, you may eat up your brake pads quickly or lose a brake power.
2. Angle grinder - You can pick up an angle grinder for $20 at any local hardware store. Metal grinding disc is recommended. Cutting disc is not suited for this operation.
3. Safety goggles - Debris WILL fly everywhere. Be sure you wear safety goggles to protect your eyes, preferably a pair that covers the sides also.
4. Wear shoes - You don't want to grind your bear feet & long pants is recommended.

You don't need to take off your tires for this operation but it may be easier. You simply need to deflate the tire & hold the tire/rim with your foot while you grind the rim.

Tools:

* Angle grinder
* Safety googles
* Extension cord (optional)




Grinding:

To achieve a light/medium (or sharp) grind, take the angle grinder close to 90° against the rim as shown below. Run along the surface of the rim towards you. To achieve a harsh grind, press down harder and quickly but smoothly grind the surface towards you in a rapid motion.



This would be a worn grind pictured below. As you can see the trials rim is thick and can handle number of grinds before it needs to be replaced.

Bakit pre pinagtawana ka na ba?

Nag grind na ako nabangit ko na ba sayo? Medyo sablay maybe dahil sa pads. Anyway may darating ako na heatsink na pads, wait ko muna yun before mag grind ulit.

Oo dre, kada balik ko dun sa LBS. Kada align nya ng rim ko napapailing sya. Hahaha. Pinaka nakakatawa pa ay pag kinikibu nya yung kasama nya tapos sabay pa silang iiling. Nyak.

Anyway, church and family day muna today. Gusto ko sana sumama sa inyo sa ride, pero buong bakasyon na ako nagbubutingting ng bike. Nag single speed na ako, nung una di ko ma-figure out kung bakit at kung saan tumatalon yung kadena. Ginamit ko nung una ay yung fireeye SS. Dun sya tumatalon, di ko alam paano may slip. I changed the chains na from 9 speed to 8 speed to a KMC7. After changing it sa DaBomb SS, umokey na.

ang dumi daw ng rear rims ko anu daw yun maitim at malagket yuck...

tinanong ko siya panu pipigilin yun chain slap sabay pedal kick ng sunod sunod sa harap ng mukha niya...

hindi nakasagot...

sabay sabi: ay sirkero ka pala!!!

sabat nun isa: hindi noh downhill yan!!!

try mo un MOB na cartridge type. matigastigas yun or un sa racer un shimano brake pad for road bike bk mag ok un

Safetyboy na ako nun kung mag goggles pa ako. (Nasobrahan ka ng internet ) Pakanan naman ang particles kasi nasa diskarte yan sa paghawak ng grinder, isang side kas ang rotation.

amm turo sakin ng tito kong mabangis sa power tools,
ang correct way daw ng paggamit ng grinder kapag metal ang material ay papunta sayo ( o sa user ) ang particles,
safety precaution ito na kun sakali man kumagat ng maigi ang disc sa material at mabitawan mo ang grinder,
eh magiging palayo sa iyo ang direksyon ng pagtalsik nito. sasapulin ka nun pagbaliktad... hehehe share ko lang. ingat sa mga may plan mag-grind.

Tungkol dun sa suggestion ni charlie na brake pads,
hindi ho ba yun yung type of pads na dapat iwasan na gamitin sa trials dahil baka mabunot ito?
im refering to the cartrige type.
pakicorrect po sana, sa mga nakakaalam jan... lito din ako.

yun din ang alam ko pag dating sa tools. mas mabuti na din ang mag goggles. mahirap mabulag. mali ang paniniwala na safety boy na ako nun kung mag goggles pa ako mentality. hehe.

hindi ba mababawasan ung durability nung sidewalls pag ginrind?

As what our PT gurus mentioned..Please wear necessary protective gear before using power tools such as angle grinder or jigsaw... better safe than sory

so I decided to give it a try if it will be able to do the same thing on the side wall of the rim

dapat kikil nalang ginamit mo. hehehe...

super mild yan. madaling maubos lalo na kung naka hs33 ka.

noted sir thanks naaalangan lang ako isagad baka masobrahan kasi.. nauubos pala ang grind katagalan? mech vbreaks lang gamit ko.

base sa experience ko, mas ok ang di naka grind pag vees. lalo na kung regular pads.
