| I saw this here: http://users.aber.ac.uk/sjs99/bike/index.html - Quote :
- The Mental Battle
"I'm trackstanding and I'm finding it hard! My muscles are starting to shake, all I hear is my heart pounding. My attempts to calm myself down aren't working. I have no choice but to give up the gap jump across two high, thin walls. The funny thing is, I knew I could do that gap 98% of the time. This is as certain as it gets in trials (the other 2% being the chance of some part of my body, or more likely bike failing). I knew I could do it because I had done the exact same gap on the same walls at a different section, just one foot high."
Mind Games?
Stephen Saville investigates:
The key to trials is confidence. If your confident about the move you are doing then the chances are you'll nail it no problem. Lack confidence and you won't commit yourself, that slight bit of doubt will make you shy away from the proper technique or required power. The equation is simple; the less confident you are the more likely you are to get injury or trash your bike. And that's what makes trials, trials, and don't we all love the adrenaline.
Confidence is the key! Practicing the moves and building up slowly increases confidence. That's why we practice, so we have the confidence to do certain moves. But there are other things we can do to increase confidence. Visualization, relaxation, focusing, and meditating are all ways to achieve a state of confident calm.
Fear:
Picture yourself on the edge of a big drop or move you want to try. What goes through your head? How a minor slip up could be disastrous? What happens if your kit fails you, your chain snaps, hub fails, bottom bracket breaks, pedal snaps?? These are the thoughts that lead to a lack of confidence. Hence they need to be banished from your mind completely. But what about that 2% chance of something failing? Well it's true (why do you think they call it an extreme sport) and important to be aware of but not while your performing your art. Take a dueling swordsman, he knows that there's a good chance he might get stabbed and die, but he mustn't think about it because 100% of his concentration is needed on the fight.
No Fear:
Everyone has their own ways of dealing with fear and focusing solely on the job in hand. Here are some very effective methods of chilling when you would otherwise be a shaking wreck:
Visualizing: If it's a really scary move then its worth sorting your head out before you even get on your bike. Close your eyes breath slowly and deeply in through your nose, then slowly release through the mouth. Relax your entire body, concentrate on any tense bits. (This is creating a state of trance, for which the next bits work best) Now totally relaxed, try to feel your heart slow down to a slow steady beat. Here comes the clever bits; First visualize a square, in it, the move your about to perform going wrong. Now visualize another square with the image of the move going as perfectly as it possibly could. Get a nice clear moving picture of the perfect technique. Now envision the second square (with the perfect move in it) smash down on top of the first and take its place, leaving you with one large square of the perfect move. For those of you that are interested this is a form of neuro linguistic programming (NLP).
When you get on your bike and line up for the move, make sure you keep breathing in the same relaxed way. Run through the move one last time, visualizing it in your head, before you initiate the move. Tip: the longer you contemplate moves like this, trackstanding on your bike the harder they become. This Trials Riding stuff is a bit scariy isnt it?
The Gamble:
To do the most impressive moves and ride on the edge of your ability will involve taking risks. Be careful calculating these risks and always try to stay confident, even if the risks are high. Depending upon how good you are at staying cool and the techniques described above it is possible to be 100% confident and totally without fear, even when the risks are high (i.e. your skill level may not quite be up to it). You must use common sense here. We all know the higher the risk the more impressive the move and the more respect you'll get, but also the more damaged you'll get if it goes pear shaped. © 2001 TrialsRide.com - HOME If you found anything on this site useful please vote for it Rate this site at Top Sites!
