Rigid or suspension fork? Empty
PostSubject: Rigid or suspension fork?   Rigid or suspension fork? Icon_minitimeWed Jul 30, 2008 10:32 am

Newbie here. I am trying to learn some basic trials move. And I am trying to setup my stock bike for it.
Here is my current bike setup.

1. Generic alloy frame, generic suspension fork(travel around 80mm), generic and headset. (bought my cheap bike in cartimar)

Rigid or suspension fork? Geometry
http://www.trials-online.com/images/geometry.jpg

I have measured my frame and geometry of frame is exactly the same as in the picture.
2. FSA DH handlebar 710mm wide.
3. Cane Creek Direct Curve Brake Levers
4. Cane Creek Direct Curve 3 Rim Brake
5. Shimano Deore SL-M530 Rapidfire Plus Shifters - 9-Speed (Rear Shifter)
6. RaceFace Ride XC 22t-32-44t. (planning to remove 44t and replace it with a bashguard. Dunno where to buy.)
7. Wheelset - Shimano Deore Hub, 7-speed cassette, rims(don\'t know the brand, but it has a sticker \"Girder XC OCR\")
8. Serfas Gator 2.0\" Tires (Front and Rear)
9. No Front Derailer and Shifter

From what I see in forums and images of a stock trials bike, they are using a rigid fork(except for RL and JLo stock bike). I am planning to buy a new fork.
I am considering Surly 1x1 Rigid fork(1kg,suspension corrected-80mm) and RST GILA Suspension Fork w/ Lockout(2.5kg).
Fork price is almost the same, around Php 3000-3500. No budget for a pricy suspension fork, like Fox, Rockshox, or Marzocchi, which I think weigh less thant the RSTs.

Which fork should I go? I will mostly ride urban, and maybe if I learn jump up to curbs, benches, etc.[left]

I would go for the surly 1x1 rigid fork. Ok sya at 1kg. My rigid fork is around 850grams.

Main reason is to be able to ride smoother at less weight.

Sama ka sa amin sa rides pre.

rigid.Smile

sa umpisa masakit sa braso, but once you get the hang of it, you wont go for a suspension fork anymore.

for starters, rigid would be the best choice. to be able to practice the moves easier. since it wont bob. especially doing an endo move. mas direct ang impact sa arms mo, and trials is about muscle memory, so di confusing, kasi di nagbabago ang height ng fork mo. para rin masanay ka na mag compensate sa pag absorb ng impact, hence, being one with the bike.

I bought a fireeye stoker, I think its heavier than the surly 1x1.

yup, for XC nga ata un rims ko. still saving to upgrade to stronger and wider rims.

Pics of my bike:

one more question, how do you shorten the length of your chains?
